Family & Home Life
Let me tell you about my familia. Both of my pais came from an island called Faial. People who live there speak Portuguese. My pais left the island in the 1880's to come to California. They sailed on a ship and made their home here in Livermore. I was born here but I can speak Portuguese like my pais. Can you speak another language?
When my pai first came here he worked on farms with many other Portuguese immigrants. He helped harvest vegetables and wheat. Sometimes he even traveled out to the vineyards to pick the grapes used for making wine. Now my pai works close to our house at the Dutcher Hardware Store. Since he speaks Portuguese and English he is able to help people like him find what they need.

My mãe stays at home, but she works very hard! She keeps our house in good shape and grows the vegetables in our small garden. She also raises our animals. We have a goat and ten chickens! Mãe milks the goat and collects the eggs which we get fresh every morning for breakfast. For every meal mãe would start the fire in the wood burning stove--just getting the stove hot enough to cook on took at least an hour. Without my mãe, there would be no one to make sure that all the hard work gets done.
The photo to the right is of the McKnown & Mess store where my mãe buys my medicine. Look up and to the left to see a scary animal that they keep in the store. Wow, that's big! |
